BOB BERGGREN – Class of 1970
Track, Cross Country
Excelled in track. Also ran cross country. A quarter-miler in track. Participated on both the 440 relay and mile relay teams. In 1969, qualified for the California State Track meet in the 440-yard relay and mile relay. Set school records with 880 yard relay, mile relay, sprint medley and distance medley teams. Voted Team Captain his senior year. Bob also was Student Body President of PHHS. Graduated from UC Berkeley with a teaching credential.
Later achieved a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Retired as General Manager of the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District. Helped organize and start the PHHS Hall of Fame. Part of the planning for the successful inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2024. Currently the chairman of the PHHS Hall of Fame Committee.
GEORGE DUNLAP - Class of 1979
Football, Wrestling, Track
PHHS: Earned White Block Letter. In football, he played on the varsity for three years. Positions were offensive guard and middle linebacker on defense. All-League both junior and senior years. Selected MVP of the 1979 team that finished 9-1 for the season. Received a football scholarship to UOP. Was a two-year varsity wrestler. Was the league Champ in his junior year. Finished second in the 191-pound weight class as a senior.
Took third place at North Coast Section and was a top 10 finisher at the state meet in his senior year. In track, he ran sprints and threw the shot put. Also ran on the 440 yard relay team.

ROGER PHILLIPS - Class of 1955
Football, Track and Field
Played football and ran track. Varsity both Junior and Senior years in Football, played wide receiver. Scored the first touchdown in PHHS history while playing end and receiving a pass from QB Steve Buckmann. Also was the Rams’ first football victory. They beat John Swett 6-0. Lettered in track as a junior and senior. Ran 120-yard high hurdles and 180 yard low hurdles. Held the school record for many years. He was Captain his junior and senior years.
He also competed in any field events that Coach Briggs needed because the team was small compared to other schools. Roger went on to active duty in the Navy and was stationed at the Naval Air Station-Oakland. He played football and ran track during the three years he was stationed there. Roger made the 12th Naval District All-Star Football Team and won the 12th Naval District Championship for the high and low hurdles for three consecutive years. Started playing Senior Softball at 51 and now has been playing for 37-plus years. Played on a team in 2015 that won the 70-plus the National Championship in Softball at age 78. In 2017 played on another world championship team in the 80-plus division. He was on a team that won another World Championship in softball in 2023. After his release from active duty, Roger was employed by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office for 29 years.
STEVE BUCKMANN - Class of 1956
Football, Basketball, Baseball
PHHS: Played quarterback on the varsity football team during both his junior and senior years. Threw the first-ever TD pass in PHHS history to Roger Phillips. In basketball, started at guard. In baseball played catcher. Was selected on the All County Team.
College: Played baseball at Diablo Valley College, then transferred to Cal Poly. Played baseball on a semi-pro team as a catcher.
Graduated from Cal Poly in 1964 and came back to the Diablo Valley area. Worked for Contra Costa County Public Works for 36 years including running the Materials Lab for the last 15 years.
MIKE CEREDA - Class of 1957
Football, Basketball, Baseball. Played varsity Football, Basketball, & Baseball starting as a sophomore. Voted Most Athletic in Senior Class of 1957. Football: played offensive and defensive backfield. Broke his leg playing football against Las Lomas High School. Basketball: Played guard. Baseball: Played outfield and pitched his senior year. Team Captain and MVP, pitched no hitter against Pacifica High School and shut out Pittsburg. Made Senior Honor Roll and was in the Block Society his Senior year.
Diablo Valley College: played Baseball and pitched. Chico State: Played Football, defensive backfield. Owned a retail drapery business and was a certified snow ski instructor. Retired early and then completed home improvements on the houses the family owned.
TERRY HUGHES – Class of 1961
Football, Basketball, Track and Field
PHHS: Excelled in basketball. Was a two-year varsity letterman on the basketball team. Played guard. As a senior, was all-DVAL first-team, Most Valuable Player and Team Captain. Later selected as guard for the All-Decade Team for the 1960’s. In football was a two-year varsity letterman. Played halfback and selected All-DVAL Honorable Mention. In track was a two-year varsity letterman, competing in the long jump and pole vault.
Also was Boy’s State Representative for PHHS and student body Vice President.
Chico State: Played four years of basketball. Lettered in three of those seasons. Selected Team Captain his senior year. Selected Far West Conference Honorable Mention in basketball.
After college: Terry came back to the Contra Costa area and was involved with the Contra Costa County Officials Association, where he was a football referee for 20 years and for 18 years as a basketball official. Also started numerous local track meets. Terry has run 26 marathons, including three Boston Marathons.
DAVE CLARK – Class of 1963
Excelled in Football and Baseball. Three-year varsity letterman in Football, outstanding Running Back. Junior Year: 2nd Team All-DVAL, Most Improved Player Award. Senior Year: DVAL All-League 1st Team, First Team All Northern-California, North-Shrine Team Selection, MVP & Team Captain. Voted Most Athletic by his class of 1963. Baseball: Four-year Varsity letterman, played shortstop and 2nd base. Track: Two year Varsity letterman – ran sprints and relays. Attended Utah State on Athletic Scholarship.
Three year Varsity letterman in Football, played Wide Receiver and returned punts. Two-year Varsity letterman in Baseball. Graduated from Utah State and earned teaching credential. Started at Concord High School teaching and coaching football & baseball, then went on to teach at Northgate High School and coached football with Roger Leonard and coached baseball as well.
STEVE SOMMER – Class of 1966
Football, Track and Field
PHHS: Played varsity football both junior and senior years. Played QB. Received All-DVAL honors. Also played defensive back, all the special teams and basically never came out of the game. Returned a 98-yard kickoff for the longest TD in PHHS history. Selected for the Contra Costa/Alameda All Star Game. In track, ran sprints, relays and did the long jump. State meet participant on the school record-setting 440-yard relay team.
Ran 2nd-fastest time in 100 yards in school history and was PHHS record-holder in the long jump. Held the school record for the 50 yard dash in PE.
Diablo Valley College: First-team Golden Gate Conference as Wide Receiver. First-team Northern California Junior College Dream Team. Junior College All American Honorable Mention. Selected to DVC Hall of Fame.
Fresno State University: Full Scholarship in both football also ran track. Lettered in both sports. Started as a wide receiver in football. Ran sprints, relays, and long jump in track. Coached varsity Football for 12 years at two local high schools in the Fresno area.
BILL COOPER - Class of 1969
Football, Wrestling, Baseball
PHHS: White Block Award Winner participating in football, wrestling and baseball. Played varsity football as a sophomore. All-DVAL center on offense and nose tackle on defense during both his junior and senior years. Made the All-East Bay first team. Unanimous selection on the Team of the Decade. Played on the 1968 championship football team. Chosen to play in the coveted East-West Shrine Football Game.
College: Played two years at Diablo Valley College and received a full-ride scholarship to Boise State University. Played two years at nose tackle for Boise State. Bill had a 40-plus years teaching and coaching career at Caldwell High School. He coached football, wrestling and baseball. Bill was inducted into the 2015 National High School Hall of Fame as a Coach/Contributor.
BOB GREEN – Class of 1972
Wrestling, Football
Wrestling: Considered one of the best wrestlers in PHHS history. Bob wrestled for 3 years at the 190-pounds and heavyweight classifications. He earned the league championship for 3 years and placed in North Coast Section for 2 years, taking first in 1972. Bob also placed third at the State CIF Tournament in 1972. He wrestled at Diablo Valley College and was the Northern California and State Champion in the heavyweight division.
He is a member of the Diablo Valley College Hall of Fame. Bob received a wrestling scholarship to Colorado State University after graduating from DVC.
Football: Played 3 years on the varsity at both offensive tackle and defensive tackle. In 1972, he was named to the All-DVAL and All-East Bay football teams as an offensive tackle.
STEVE BREITER Class of 1974
Swimming
Steve excelled in swimming for PHHS, making the varsity all four years, setting 8 school records, 3 North Coast Section records and being named to the All-DVAL swim team for 4 years. He was the 1974 Male Athlete of the Year, was awarded Parker-Robb Super Sport Athlete and was Most Valuable on the swimming team. Steve attended University of South Carolina on a full scholarship and was All-Conference and NCAA qualifier all 4 years.
He earned Bachelor’s Degree at South Carolina and Master’s Degrees from Clemson University. In 1992 he finished 8th in the country in the10K Open Water swim. Steve taught and coached swimming from 1991-2023.
ROBERTA BRUDER-CHISAM – Class of 1974
Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Field
PHHS: Instrumental during the beginning of Girls sports at the high school level. A three-year member of first-ever girls cross country team, played two years on the basketball team as the starting center, and three years on the track and field team. Helped start the Girls cross country and track teams. Set school records as member of the 440 relay, 880 medley and mile relay teams. Set individual records in the 80-yard low hurdles, 100, 200, long jump and high jump.
Fitzpatrick Super Sport Award for winning four events at the DeKlotz Relays. School record in 80-yard low hurdles and first place at the NCS qualifying meet. Team placed third overall at the NCS championships. Placed in the top 4 in three events at the NCS Finals. PHHS Academic Athlete Award.
UCLA: Competed for three years in track and field. Threw the javelin, discus and 400 hurdles. Competed in three consecutive AIAW National championships in javelin and one year in the discus. UCLA won AIAW National Championships in two of those years, 75,77. Coached at UCLA from 1978 84 as the women’s throwing coach. Coached several NCAA All-Americans and Olympic athletes. UCLA won the first-ever women’s NCAA National championships in 1981 and again in 1982.
ROBERTA BRUDER-CHISAM – Class of 1974 cont.
Spent 1986-2019 as a science teacher and coach at St. Francis High School in Mountain View. She was the head Girls cross country and track coach. Won numerous Central Coast Section championships in both cross country and track. Received Honors Coach in cross country and track. She also coached on several USA National teams.
JOHN GREEN – Class of 1975
Football, Basketball
PHHS: 1975 Gold Cup winner. Excelled in basketball but played a pretty good quarterback. Was held back due to injuries. Football: Played varsity his junior and senior years at QB. As a senior, led the team to a 3-0 start, then injured his ribs. Came back later in the season and played the last two games. PHHS finished with a 7-2 record for third place in the league. Basketball: Junior year played forward and center. PHHS finished second in the league, and John was selected second-team All-DVAL.
In his senior year was voted captain and MVP, made a number of all-tournament teams including the Mid-Valley Classic and JC Nesbitt Tournament. Received the Fitzpatrick Super Sport Award. Selected first-team All-DVAL.
Diablo Valley College: Played basketball for two seasons. Selected first-team All-Golden Gate Conference. Inducted into the DVC Hall of Fame. Received basketball scholarship to UC-Riverside.
UC Riverside: Played two years. Led the team in scoring both seasons. Twice selected to the California Collegiate Athletic Association team, first as a second-team member in his junior year, then to the All-CCAA first team as a senior. He also earned small-college All-American honors from the Associated Press.
NBA: He was drafted by the New York Knicks in 1979, after being release by the Knicks, John coached on year at CPHS and was a Assistant Coach at Sacramento State for two years. Retired at Deputy chief after a 29 year career with the Sacramento County Probation Department.
SANDY JOHNSON-SHAW – Class of 1979
Swimming, Basketball, Track & Field.
PHHS: Excelled in track. Finished first at North Coast Section in the discus as a freshman. In her sophomore year was league champion in both shot put and discus, qualifying for the state meet in the two events. Junior year: Was MVP in track, the league champion in shot put and discus, f inished second in the Meet of Champions in the discus and broke School Record, and placed fifth at the State Meet in the discus. Became the second girl ever to place at the California State Meet.
Senior Year: Repeated as the league champ in the shot and discus, setting school records in both. Captured fifth place finish at the State Track Meet in the discus and won the Silver Cup Athletic Award.
Diablo Valley College: 1981 Female Athlete of the Year. Was a two-year starter in basketball. In track: she holds records for shot put at DVC. Inducted into DVC’s Hall of Fame.
Boise State: Full ride scholarship and competed in track and field. Placed second at Nationals in shot put and set school record. Graduated from Boise State. From 1985-2021 taught and coached volleyball, basketball and track at Mt. Diablo High School. Received Teacher of the Year in 2007-08 from MDUSD and County for her contribution and recognition of the development of the Medical and Biotechnology Academy at Mt. Diablo High School.

BOB - Class of 1963
Football, Wrestling, Track Football: Defense Lineman. Wrestling: 167-pound league champion. Wiget Award winner at PHHS. Graduated from Santa Clara University, wrestled there all four years.
JEANNIE - Class of 1964
Great athlete at PHHS, but there were no women’s sports. Class Secretary at PHHS during her senior year. Received Bank of America Business Award in her senior year.
GREG - Class of 1965
Football, Wrestling Football: Nose guard and center. Was all-DVAL and all Northern California. Had the longest fumble recovery for a TD in PHHS history. Wrestled heavyweight and was league champion. Earned a football scholarship to Oregon State.
MARK - Class of 1968
Football, Wrestling, TrackPHHS:
In football was all league tight end and defensive end. Played in the Contra Costa County vs. Alameda County All-Star game. Holds PHHS receiving record. Wrestled for three years for three years. In track, won the league title in low hurdles. Took second place in the high hurdles. Qualified for North Coast Section in both hurdle races. College: Offered a scholarship to St. Mary’s, but went to DVC and played football in addition to running track. Earned scholarship to play football at Cal. Won a gold medal in the hurdles at the International Police Olympics.

Football, Track Football: Was an all-league defensive back and running back. Held record for most interceptions. Received a scholarship to the University of New Mexico. Played four years at defensive back.
Track: Leading sprinter at PHHS. Went to the state meet in both the 440-yard relay and mile relay. Helped set a school record in the mile relay.
JOE - Class of 1971
Football, Track In football was a wide receiver and defensive end. As a track athlete, ran both the high and low hurdles.
1976 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
The girls 1976 cross country team went undefeated in the Diablo Valley Athletic League. The team finished second at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions. PHHS was led by MVP Linda Robinson. She won the DVAL race, then captured first place at the North Coast Section race with a time of 11:53, one second ahead of the runner-up, and more than a half-minute ahead of any runner from the DVAL. The Rams were ranked fourth in Northern California.
Runners on the team included Robinson, Sandy Kutulas, Nancy Pannell Smith, Maureen O’Brien Spizzuocco, Judy Iten Camaleri, Joanna Schmelling Agnostino, Marci Farquhar-Snow and Marie Schuetze-Coburn.
1976 BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM
The 1976 boys baseball team was a special team that went on to be the first team ever in PHHS Baseball history to win North Coast. It won the league two years in a row and was led by MVP pitcher Bob Clark. John Raeside was Captain of the team and also was named All-League. Kevin Olsen led the team in hitting with a 407 batting average and was also selected f irst-team All-League. Olsen was also selected as Most Improved Player on the team.
In the North Coast Section championship game, the Rams beat Redwood High School, which was previously ranked No. 1 in high school baseball. From this team, three players were drafted in the pros: Raeside/New York Mets, Clark/Chicago Cubs, Shoemaker/Philadelphia Phillies. Four players went on to play college baseball: Ed Rettagliata, John Buschini, Kevin Olsen, and Raeside. Bob Clark and John Raeside were inducted into the Inaugural PHHS Hall of Fame.
